Professional Liability Insurance (Errors and Omissions)
Professional liability — errors and omissions — responds when a client says your advice, design, specification, or professional service caused a financial loss. General liability does not do that job. GL is bodily injury and property damage. E&O is the bad drawing, the missed code issue, the consulting memo that steered a project wrong.
We place miscellaneous professional liability for consultants and agencies, contractors E&O for design-build and installation trades, manufacturers E&O, technology E&O for IT and software services, and class-specific professional coverage for barbers and salons, auto-service operations, and pastoral counseling inside a religious organization.
Most professional liability is claims-made. That means the policy in force when the claim is made (and reported) is the one that responds, provided the act happened after the retroactive date. Canceling a claims-made policy without tail coverage is how firms create silent uninsured years. We say that on every renewal.
Contractors E&O is not a substitute for builders risk or for GL completed operations. It is the you-installed-it-to-the-wrong-spec claim. Manufacturers E&O is the you-designed-the-component-wrong claim, distinct from products liability for injury. We keep those lines from being double-counted or assumed to overlap when they do not.
Medical professional liability for hospitals and surgery centers is a different market than a small medical or dental office. We place office-level professional coverage where we have a market; we will not pretend a small-commercial application is hospital coverage. Tell us what you actually do in the chair or the clinic.
- Miscellaneous professional Consultants, marketers, inspectors, and agencies whose product is advice.
- Contractors and manufacturers E&O Design-build, installation errors, and specified-product failures that are not bodily injury or property damage.
- Technology E&O IT services, implementation, and software-related professional claims.
- Class-specific professional Salon, auto-service, and other endorsements that sit beside the package policy.
Frequently asked questions
Does my general liability policy include E&O?
Almost never in a way that helps. A professional-services exclusion is common on contractor and consultant GL forms. If you sell advice or design, buy the professional policy.
What is a retroactive date?
The earliest date a claims-made policy will recognize an act. Keep it continuous when you change carriers. Resetting it to today orphans last year's work.
Do I need tail coverage if I retire or sell the firm?
Usually yes on a claims-made form. An extended reporting period lets late claims find the last policy. We quote tail before you dissolve the LLC, not after.
Can a contractor buy E&O?
Yes — contractors professional / E&O is a standard claims-made product for design-build, design-assist, and installation-to-spec work.
