Food Manufacturing and Food Processor Insurance

Food manufacturing is a products-liability and spoilage account before it is a building account. A recall, a cooler failure, or a foreign-material claim will test the file harder than a broken window. We place commissaries, specialty food plants, and processors that are still commercial — not a restaurant kitchen that wholesales a little bread.

If you are a storefront bakery, start on that page. If you are a full plant with retailers or distributors as customers, this is the chassis. Texas, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, and Washington show up most often on these applications.

Risks we actually schedule

  • Contamination, recall, and products claims on goods already on a retailer’s shelf.
  • Refrigeration or cooker breakdown and the spoilage of a run.
  • Fire in a grease- or dust-rich production room.
  • Warehouse and transit losses on finished goods that left the plant.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need product-recall coverage?

If you sell into grocery or food service, discuss it. Recall expense is not automatic on a package, and a retailer will not wait for your GL to argue about it.

Is a commissary a restaurant or a manufacturer?

If the output is packaged or delivered as product, it is manufacturing. If the output is tonight’s catering, see our catering page. Many operators are both — we split the receipts.

Does Washington L&I apply to plant staff?

WA-situs plant payroll generally stays with L&I. We place stop-gap and private WC for competitive-state plants.
